Hoping for 120 entries in Fingal Mile Ocean Swim

04 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
THE second annual Fingal Mile Ocean Swim held by Fingal Beach Surf Club will take place this Saturday January 7.

The event, which takes place over a 1.6km m-shaped course, drew 60 competitors in its inaugural year and raised more than $300 for the surf club.

Event coordinator Kate Preston is confident this year will be even bigger.

"Ideally we'd like double that amount [of competitors] ... I think we will," she said.

This year two additional events will be added to complement the main race, with a shorter 850metre sprint going over half of the course and a "back of the pack" contest for those who want to swim with flippers or wetsuit.

"It will be a fun day and there is also sand-modelling for the kids so it's definitely a family atmosphere," Preston said.

Last year the competition attracted a large crowd on the beach and Preston would encourage spectators to come and watch the activities.

The minimum age to compete in the race is 12 years old and entrance costs $30, those interested can register at www.oceanswims.com
