THE Lakeside Leisure Centre at Raymond Terrace has been forced to install surveillance cameras after a spate of break-ins.
The centre has been broken into and vandalised the past four weekends and police are investigating the incidents.
According to manager Kerry Paterson, the offenders jumped the fence to enter the premises and smashed windows, vandalised wind breaks and ransacked the kiosk .
Fence damage adds to the growing vandalism bill and an $800 two-way radio was stolen during the ransacking. The worst of the four break-ins saw the offenders throw all of the centre's garbage bins into the outdoor pool and the rubbish including dirty nappies which contaminated the pool.
"We had 270 people waiting outside for a carnival and the pool was contaminated," she said.
While police are investigating the break-ins the centre is working with Port Stephens Council to install the new surveillance cameras and catch the culprits. Security checks of the site have also been increased since the vandalism started.
The carnival pool users were not the only people to have their leisure centre experience dampened.
On the weekend the children from Camp Quality were set to spend the day at the centre the vandals entered the premises and smashed glass windows making many of the pool areas unsafe for use. Anyone with information should contact crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
