Kelly, 13, recently competed for NSW at the Australian national athletics carnival held at the AIS in Canberra, and the young speedster did not fail to impress, winning gold for the NSW team in the relay, silver in the 100-metre event and bronze in the 400-metre.
The effort helped NSW retain the national athletics cup, and Kelly said it was a rewarding experience.
"It was hard being separated from my family [for the competition] but they are really good at telling you what you need to do and it was great meeting some of the other kids," he said.
Kelly trains several times a week with a sprint coach as well as playing rugby union with the Nelson Bay Gropers, another sport he is excelling at.
He was recently selected for the NSW country team to tour Canberra, Sydney and Lismore later in the year.
He said he hoped for a sporting scholarship from one of the leading Sydney schools like Knox Grammar or Kings.
