At the council's first ordinary meeting this week a proposal was put forward by a commercial interest wanting permission to lodge a DA to use the park for a carnival during the Christmas and Easter holidays.

"The current process is that once an interest has been received council approval must be obtained prior to the lodgement of a DA," the council's parks asset officer Kris Koch explained in a report to council.

The carnival would consist of mechanical rides, food vans and amplified music, the applicant told the council.

It would take place from 6pm to midnight and is expected to take up about half of Anzac Park on the Tea Gardens foreshore.

The applicant also wants to conduct fireworks on the river on New Year's Eve.

Great Lakes councillor Carol McCaskie said she thought the carnival would be largely positive for the area.

"It's been a bit of a shame that there hasn't been something here like that for a while," she said.

"It just adds another dimension to the area."

The main issue would probably be the "sensitive" location of the proposal.

"We're going to need a little more about it before any decisions are made," Cr McCaskie said.
