The site is a joint initiative of the Great Lakes Library Service and the Great Lakes Historical Society.
Those behind the project are encouraging people with local knowledge to head to the page and add comments to any of the photographs.
Project officer Tracey Lang said clickHistory Great Lakes was helping create a valuable and extensive history collection for the area.
"We are harnessing people power and everyone's memories of our local region to create a new digital photography collection which will be freely accessible by the public."
The project involves digitisation of the historical society's photographic collection, which will then be available online.
"We'd really appreciate it if people could start by following clickHistory Great Lakes on Facebook and then telling us anything they can about the photographs we post up there," Ms Lang said.
"With your input we can really help bring the photographs to life."
The project is in full swing and residents can expect the Facebook page to change frequently.
How rich the story behind each photograph will be is now up to the public.
