The new path will stretch between the pedestrian-dense area from Myall Quays Shopping Centre and Boston Street.
The council's director of engineering services, Ron Hartley, said the works completed an important missing link in the network.
"The works link with paths constructed two years ago on Myall Street between Boston Street and Coupland Avenue," Mr Hartley said.
The proposed works will include construction of new kerb and gutter and the new shared path on the eastern side of Myall Street.
Drainage works will also be incorporated into the project.
"The completed works will improve access for pedestrians and cyclists along Myall Street," Mr Hartley said.
Works are expected to be completed in May, weather permitting.
Traffic control will be in place throughout the works, leading to short delays for motorists.
