Wirreanda Public School students compete at Sydney's Motorsport Park

SYDNEY’S Motorsport Park is known for its elite car racing but yesterday more than 2000 unlicensed drivers took to the popular circuit in pedalled push carts.

Wirreanda Public School students went from the playground to the speedway to compete in the friendly competition known as the TechnoPush challenge.

Teams from schools across the state competed in the challenge using carts built from material supplied by sponsors.

Wirreanda assistant principal, Carl Leonard said students had been toiling hard for more than two terms to build the school’s two carbon-fibre carts.

‘‘The value of this project is that is a community-based project,’’ he said.

Students were active in gaining supplies from hardware stores and money from businesses to help fund the trip down.

Mr Leonard said the two carts on show were put through rigorous training runs to ensure they were suitably qualified for the event.

‘‘There was four weeks of training...you don’t want to get down there and have your cart fall apart on the track,’’ he said.

This is the fourth year the school has competed.
