A call was made to the fire and rescue unit about 10am on April 8, reporting that an Arab horse named Cav needed rescuing from a water drain at a property in Bobs Farm.
Anna Bay Rural Fire Service firefighters were called to assist the rescue mission.
Nelson Bay Fire and Rescue unit captain Malcolm Smith said it took some innovative thinking to free the horse.
"It's not very often you get to see a horse stuck in a drain," he said.
"A couple of the crew have had something to do with horses, so that helped."
Captain Smith said the horse owner found Cav in the drain when she went searching for him in the paddock that morning.
He was wedged in the drain, which was about one metre deep.
Firefighters put bales of hay and dirt in the bottom of the drain to give the horse some footing.
About 30 minutes later, after some gentle coaxing and pulling, Cav was free.
Captain Smith said the horse was fine.
"He just needed a wash down," he said.
