Rob Mundle OAM flew in from Queensland to attend the SPS presentation night on Wednesday. He talked about his love of the sport and the maritime books it inspired.
The boating enthusiast spent a career making time for his two passions, journalism and sailing.
"I love my sport and I love my job, I'm lucky enough to have combined the two," he said.
A fourth maritime history book is in the works.
Called First Fleet, its release this Christmas will be Mr Mundle's fourteenth publication.
His books Bligh - Master Mariner, Flinders, The Man Who Mapped Australia, Cook - from Sailor to Legend, and Fatal Storm became best-sellers across Australia within a few weeks of their release.
The author said he never thought his books would reach such heights.
"It's something I never expected, but I'll take it," he said.
Mr Mundle has competed in SPS three times and said it featured in his body of works.
"It's [Port Stephens] a wonderful place to sail," he said.
