Cr MacKenzie said this week that 62 applications were received for the top job and the first round interviews of four candidates were on Monday, April 14.
"We've had a high calibre of candidates" he said.
"But we've got to get the right one.
"We've got department managers that are the right ones, we just need someone to lead them."
The current general manager Peter Gesling went public with his decision to step down from the position in February.
He announced he would not look to renew his contract and would finish up in July after 16 years on the job.
Since the announcement questions have been raised as to who might take the top spot but a list of frontrunners has not yet been announced by the council.
Second round interviews are expected to be held but Cr MacKenzie did not elaborate on when.
Cr Geoff Dingle has been critical of the selection process. He has called for more transparency in the selection, and wants all councillors to be present.
But Cr MacKenzie said he was simply following local government procedure.
"We are not going into any Bruce MacKenzie paths," he said.
A mayoral minute will be prepared for formal appointment of the successful candidate by the council.
Staff will be advised after the appointment has been confirmed.
It is envisaged that the successful applicant would be in place by the time Mr Gesling leaves.
