The married couple will both receive Order of Australia Medals for service to the community – and what a long list of service it is.
Ted’s community work includes his time with the Returned and Services League.
The league is close to his heart after serving in the air force for two-and-a-half years, completing more than 800 hours in the air.
“It is an absolute pleasure and a great honour to work with the RSL,” he said.
“I will wear my OAM with pride every Anzac Day and memorial service.”
Both Ted and Mavis have worked tirelessly at Peter Sinclair Gardens retirement village and even have a wing named after them.
“I love going over to the gardens,” Mavis said.
“We’ve been here from the start and now we go over for the sing-a-longs and the services and everything.”
Mavis has worked with the Lioness Club, Women’s Auxiliary and the RSL, to name a few.
She is most proud of her work with the Red Cross, getting the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area access to Telecross, a program where elderly and sick people get a daily phone call to make sure they are OK.
Mavis is 88 and Ted is 90, but neither plans to slow down with their community work any time soon and both said they love how caring and accepting their local community is.
“We were never rich but we gave what we had,” Ted said.
