The council’s communication officer  Melissa Bawden  said staff were deeply saddened by the ‘‘sudden and unexpected passing’’ of the popular manager.

‘‘Only a week ago David made a presentation to councillors on the achievements of his branch in the last year and councillors acknowledged the great achievements that have been made,’’ Ms Bawden said.

‘‘David was very well respected in the community as a person who was happy to communicate and resolve issues in a friendly consultative manner.

‘‘He will be sorely missed in council and in the wider community.’’

Mr Bortfeld began working for the Great Lakes Council in 2003.

He held a management position all that time, being responsible for all of the council’s parks, sports fields, beaches, foreshores, playgrounds, pools and showgrounds.

‘‘He managed a budget of $8million per year and led a team of some 700 volunteers as well as council staff,’’ Ms Bawden said.

‘‘During his time with council vast improvements were made in the way council managed its green assets and the entire community is receiving the benefits of David’s hard work and vision.’’

Myall River Action Group spokesman Gordon Grainger said the community would miss Mr Bortfeld.

‘‘We’ve known David for about six years through his involvement with the Myall River project,’’ Mr Grainger said.

‘‘We’ve appreciated his help and assistance.

‘‘We know many members of the community will miss his input.’’

As the Examiner went to print, it was unclear what the cause of Mr Bortfeld’s death was.
