Rebecca Farrell is aiming to raise $25,000 between now and when she leaves for Papua New Guinea in April next year.
"I have wanted to trek the 96-kilometre Kokoda Trail through mountainous jungle in Papua New Guinea since partaking in the Anzac Day marches on behalf of my grandparents - who both served their country," she said.
Ms Farrell, a mother of two, chose to raise funds for Oxfam after seeing the work they do with children.
"I wanted to achieve something that would give back to help some of these children who do it much tougher than most of us could ever imagine," she said.
Individuals can help by supporting Nelson Bay Cinema on August 30, when it hosts a special movie release of One Hundred Foot Journey to help Ms Farrell raise funds.
Tickets are $20 each which includes pre-movie drinks, nibbles and raffle prizes.
"I know money is tight for a lot of us but if we could spare just $1 each, collectively we can enhance the lives of so many children," she said.
■ Businesses can purchase sponsorship packages priced from $250.
