The Nelson Bay op shop, which directs 100 per cent of its profits back into the community, made a $7000 donation to the Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary.
With the money, the auxiliary bought two specialty mattresses, worth $3500 each, for the hospital, which will help relieve pressure on patients' bodies and stop the formation of ulcers.
"It's a pleasure to know we're helping locals, that we can do something to make things a little more comfortable out here," the op shop's manager, Yvonne Duffy, said.
The donation came about after a discussion between an auxiliary member and Mrs Duffy at church.
"I asked if there was anything needed at the hospital and this is what they [auxiliary] asked for," Mrs Duffy said.
Initially the donation was to be $5000, but the additional $2000 was put in by the op shop to cover the entire cost of both mattresses.
Mrs Duffy said supporting the hospital was a smart move as it is a "very important place" in the community.
As well as the two mattresses, the hospital has also received about $7000 worth of equipment including a procedure light, two slings, a vaccine fridge and a book, Don't Rush to Crush.
The items were bought by the auxiliary after consultation with the hospital.
