On July 16, the Minister for Ageing John Ajaka and Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann visited the Aquatic Close clubhouse and presented $5000 to the croquet club's president, Jann Thomas.
The money will go towards putting shade sails over seated areas around the croquet pitches to protect players from the sun.
"The club has plans for more courts, an improved clubhouse with kitchen and self-contained toilet facilities, and lighting to allow use of the courts at night," Mr Baumann said.
"The members mentioned to me their desire to have shade sails installed on the benches around the courts to help shield the players from the sun.
"Thankfully the minister was able to accede to my request for funding for these shades."
Mr Baumann said the croquet club was a valuable asset to the community and one he was "delighted" to be able to help.
Mr Ajaka agreed and said he was proud to support a club which worked hard to improve social and fitness opportunities for seniors in the area.
"The Nelson Bay Croquet Club has been used by the community for more than 15 years," Mr Ajaka said.
"While croquet is played by all age groups, it is recognised that croquet is a game most enjoyed by seniors."
