The unit, based in Booral, is in dire need of new volunteers.
‘‘We are putting a call out for new members to help meet this increase in community need for assistance regarding severe weather,’’ unit controller Stephen Harris said.
‘‘The NSW SES has a job for everybody.
‘‘We are particularly interested in recruiting new members who have administration and information technology skills that can help us in our operations control centre.”
The Karuah Valley unit was established in the late 1980s.
It currently has 10 members who train once a week on a Monday night.
The unit covers about half of the Great Lakes Council area and includes Wards River to Limeburners Creek, across to Bulahdelah and down to Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest.
In 2013 the unit’s members provided nearly 5000 volunteer hours by way of training, community education and in response to community calls for help regarding storm damage and floods.
Anyone interested in becoming a member can phone the SES volunteer line on 1800201000 or head to ses.nsw.gov.au/volunteering. For more information phone Stephen Harris on 0427 254 897.
