The grandmother, who lives in Raymond Terrace, can be seen walking door to door each September to try and encourage people to dig deep and give to the Heart Foundation.
"I don't get a lot," Ms Lucas said.
"Last year I think I raised $100.
"I think because there are so many other things to donate to, people are sick of donating.
"But I knock and ask if they want to, and if they say 'no' I don't push."
It was after her son-in-law Chris and his four children all aged under 10 moved to Townsville that the former Port Stephens man had a heart attack and died.
He was in his 30s and healthy.
Since then, Ms Lucas, who walks with her dog each day, has given her time for the Heart Foundation's annual Big Heart Appeal.
This year the charity hopes to recruit an army of 32,000 big-hearted volunteers to knock on doors in their neighbourhood during September.
The Heart Foundation hopes to raise $1.5 million to help fight against heart disease, which is the number one killer of men and women in NSW.
