ON a pool deck and with a nod to ‘‘Newy’’, Jennifer Hawkins doused herself in ice water.

It’s not quite as odd as it sounds, and the Newcastle Herald is claiming the credit – all for a worthy cause.
Yesterday, like Oprah, Steven Spielberg and Stephen Hawking before her, the former Miss Universe took the ALS ice bucket challenge. She posted a video on Instagram.
‘‘I nominate Donald Trump, Jake Wall and Sean Anderson,’’ Hawkins said in the clip, tipping a bucket on her head with a squeal.
Wall is Hawkins’s husband, Anderson her manager and Trump the US billionaire who owns brand Miss Universe. It will be hard for Trump to get out of the challenge; Homer Simpson had nominated him earlier in the day.
Under the rules of the challenge, which has mushroomed into an online craze with scores of celebrity participants, the three must now go under to raise awareness of the disease ALS (better-known in Australia as motor neurone disease).
A hapless Herald columnist took the challenge on Tuesday and, along with NBN’s Mike Rabbitt, nominated Hawkins. Mainly for a laugh.
‘‘FYI – been nominated a few times & I have donated to ALS charity,’’ she replied to Herald inquiries yesterday afternoon.
‘‘I think it’s time to dump a bucket of ice water on my head! #LoveToNewy.’’
Under the video of her minor drenching, Hawkins wrote: ‘‘thank you for your nominations! I would love to bring awareness to #ALS.’’
When Miss Universe takes you up, coincidence or not, you tend to claim it. So we have.
And as drenchings go, it was as glamorous as they come.
