Two days before Father’s Day last Sunday, students from the Medowie school donned capes and masks to recognise their real life heroes - their dads and grandfathers.
Even the teachers got involved.
About 200 dads and grandfathers turned out to Wirreanda Public School Friday morning to enjoy a barbecue breakfast and some time with their children.
‘‘We do lots of things for mums, so we thought this would be something really nice to do for dads,’’ Wirreanda Public School principal Philippa Young said.
‘‘They are a big part of the community and a lot are RAAF dads who may not get a lot of time with their children.’’
Ms Young said the school had been overwhelmed with the positive response of holding a Father’s Day breakfast.
The school’s defence education liaison officer, Karen Schieb, said the morning would not have been possible without the donations and support of Bakers Delight at Raymond Terrace, Coles Medowie, Storage King at Raymond Terrace and the Williamtown RAAF Base.
Additionally, children who dressed up as superheroes donated a gold coin to Muscular Dystrophy Australia for its fund-raising campaign held the first week in September - Superhero Day for Muscular Dystrophy.
