And it seems the Port mayor wants to team up with the federal politician and mogul.
Cr MacKenzie wrote a formal letter inviting federal MP Clive Palmer to Port Stephens as part of his push against proposed changes to the dole.
"I write with respect to your stated position on the Federal Government's proposed changes to the dole announced in the May budget," the letter read.
"I trust that your opposition to the kind of Santa Claus work for the dole scheme proposed by the Abbott Government continues to this day.
"Assuming this to be the case, I certainly share your view."
Cr MacKenzie offers his full support to Mr Palmer and the Palmer United Party in his letter.
He also writes about the success of the Whitlam Government's Regional Employment Development (RED) scheme and suggests the two men should meet to discuss this further.
Cr MacKenzie received a response from Mr Palmer this week saying he appreciated the support, but that he was too busy to visit Port Stephens.
