A development application (DA) has been lodged with Port Stephens Council to change the use of a Donald Street premises for use as a community centre.
The site is earmarked as the new home for the Yacaaba Centre which provides homelessness support services, counselling and more on the Tomaree Peninsula.
In August the centre was offered a $200,000 lifeline in Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) funding.
This followed a campaign to secure the future of the centre after its original state government funding was redirected to the Raymond Terrace Neighbourhood Centre.
According to Port Stephens councillor Sally Dover the DA is a top priority for the council, with hopes of gaining approval by October.
"They do such a fabulous job in our community and it is important for us to get behind it and support it," she said.
The property is provided by a person who wishes to remain nameless and all of the work and documentation needed for the DA has been completed for free.
Centre director Lynn Vatner said she is "really, really excited" at the prospect of a new home.
"We are delighted to move into a better location for clients," she said.
