FINISHING touches were being put on the new Salamander Bay NSW Fire and Rescue station this week with firefighters to begin operating from the new building by mid-October.

Superintendent Greg Windeatt, zone commander for NSW Fire and Rescue, said the brigade would formally take possession of the new station in Salamander Way at the end of the week when work was to be completed.
He said the official move-in date for the Nelson Bay NSW Fire and Rescue crew was October 15.
"We hope to have the bulk of it done on that day, but it's not just picking up furniture from one place and putting it in another," Superintendent Windeatt said.
"We have to remain operational."
While the move in date is October 15, the official opening will be held on December 2.
Superintendent Windeatt said the move from Nelson Bay to Salamander Bay was necessary not only because the unit had outgrown the Yacaaba Street station, but because of the direction the Bay was expanding.
"The Salamander Bay precinct has moved, expanding out towards Taylors Beach," he said.
"It was necessary to relocate our resources, plus this new station has a lot more room."
The $2.5 million NSW government-funded station is located next to the existing NSW Ambulance station along Salamander Way. It includes a double engine bay, storage areas, a mess area and an office.
