New captain Josh Moxey elected to bat first and led the way for his team.
Openers Matt Rolston (38) and Blair Lane (11) got the side off to a solid start with a 52-run opening partnership.
It allowed Craig Hunter (43) and Moxey (155 not out) to combine for a Pythons record third-wicket stand of 176.
Josh Dall went to the crease when Hunter departed and scored 18 to push the score to 3-283 off the 40 overs.
Moxey's innings of 155 included 12 fours, eight sixes and came off only 92 balls.
It is now the highest score recorded by a batsman at King Park 5.
The Pythons were able to dismiss Paterson for 83.
All bowlers played their part in giving the hosts a chance of maximum points with Mitch Groat, Josh Dall and Adam Butler all picking up one wicket.
The opening pair of Allan Baldwin (2-25) and Joel Magnee (2-22) set the standard in the early overs but it was veteran Jimmy Magnee who starred as he claimed 2-13 off seven.
The Pythons played in its first B-grade match in three years against former A-grade premiers Bowthorne.
Bowthorne got across the line for the loss of only six wickets.
The D-grade side started its title defence with a tight two-wicket loss to Tarro.
