First he was with The Dominoes, but now he's recognised as lead vocalist of The Platters.
Powell was signed to The Platters by founder Buck Ram, also the group's manager and songwriter, to replace former singer Tony Williams.
He joined Ines Zak, Don Gloude and Kenn Johnson to complete The Platters.
Ram led The Platters to their first contract with Mercury Records and in the 50s Only You became their first gold record.
Many more hits were to follow including: The Great Pretender, Twilight Time, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and You've Got The Magic Touch.
The Platters will perform their many hits at Wests New Lambton on Wednesday, November 5 and Hexham Bowling Club on Thursday, November 6.
Tickets to the shows, available by phoning either venue, cost $39 for club members and $44 for non-members.
