WELL-known local sportsman Peter Miers is the current "Skins" golf champion of Nelson Bay Golf Club.
Peter had a stellar sporting career in the horse racing industry which allowed him to play golf midweek on non-racing days.
He started as a jockey in Sydney when he was 15 years old and quit the saddle when he was 43.
In a career that saw him ride in Sydney, Newcastle and overseas in England and America, he was also a premiership winning jockey in Hong Kong, where he rode for 12 years.
On returning to Australia he was a horse trainer at Randwick for 10 years before returning to Nelson Bay.
World-class swim
PETER Miers' son Scott also makes it into sports shorts after ending a promising golf career to concentrate on long-distance swimming.
His swimming interest was ignited when he took his daughters to nippers.
After a host of ocean swims, including two Cottesloe to Rottnest marathon swims in Western Australia, he decided to conquer the English Channel.
Last month Scott made the gruelling swim in a world-class time of nine hours and 59 minutes and in doing so raised $15,000 for the Children's Cancer Institute.
Player on a roll
FORMER Nelson Bay junior rugby league player James Elias continues to impress the coaching staff at the Newcastle Knights.
After a consistent junior season - 13 tries - he has progressed to the NSW Cup team under coach Rick Stone. He has a contract for 2015.
Last Sunday at Shark Park James made his international debut when he played in a test match for Lebanon against Fiji for the Hayne Mannah Cup.
The strong Fijian team ran out victors 40-28.
James has a three-week break before the training grind starts in mid-November.
Emphatic win
NELSON Bay Golf Club C-grade pennant team continues its successful season with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Beresfield Golf Club at Muree last Sunday.
Winners for the Bay were Warwick Moss, Richard Graystone, John Maslen, Gary Troon and Wal Reisch.
The B-grade looked all at sea without their motivating manager and lost to Pacific Dunes 4-2.
