THE township of Bulahdelah will pay tribute to those who have sacrificed through war next month with a special Remembrance Day centenary service.
This year the town will observe Remembrance Day on Saturday, November 15, during the Bulahdelah Show.
Bulahdelah Show Society president Gary Gooch said the move to observe Remembrance Day on the Saturday was to capitalise on having the number of people already turned out to the show attend the service.
Additionally, special guests including the member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, and Paterson MP Bob Baldwin were available to attend.
At 2pm on November 15, a contingent led by the NSW Police mounted unit followed by the Great Lakes-Manning Valley Light Horse troop, the Newcastle Scottish band, RAAF Base Williamtown personnel, veterans and school children will march to the showground.
There, at 2.30pm, a dedication service for the restoration of the Bulahdelah district 1914-1918 soldiers’ memorial gates would take place.
“We have been working on the restoration project for a couple of years and timed the ceremony to coincide with the Anzac centenary commemorations,’’ Mr Gooch said.
The old pillars to the memorial gates had been lying at the back of the beef cattle pavilion at the showground. The centenary was the motivation to have the gates restored.
‘‘We have replicated the steel gates and pillars and have made use of local materials and skills with a lot of volunteer effort,’’ Mr Gooch said.
‘‘The timber side fence and panels are of tallowood and mortised in the traditional way to reflect our timber heritage.’’
The Bulahdelah district saw 70 people enlist in World War I, 19 never returning home alive.
