Port Stephens Council's submission into the APC Waste Management Award has seen the town of Raymond Terrace announced as a finalist in the Keep NSW Beautiful-led awards.
"The work behind the award is really about two teams, waste compliance and waste management, collaborating to give a 'whole of council' approach to waste," the council's waste compliance and strategy co-ordinator, Nicholas Jones, said.
"Both teams are instigating some really proactive initiatives that surround the management of waste within our LGA."
The initiatives include illegal waste investigations, illegal waste education, community engagement and working with large landholders like Hunter Water and National Parks and Wildlife Services to reduce the amount of illegal dumping.
The Tilligerry Peninsula, specifically the towns of Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabula and Tanilba Bay, entered 11 categories in the Tidy Towns Awards, including best overall tidy town.
Last week they were announced as finalists in seven categories.
They are finalists in their population category in the awards for sustainable business, Office of Environment and Heritage wildlife corridors and habitat conservation, young legends, water conservation, energy efficiency and the overall award for population category D.
The Tilligerry Peninsula is also a finalist in the APC Waste Management Award.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at Nundle, on the November 7 to 9 weekend.
