The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal was launched at the Salamander Bay store last Thursday, November 13.
All gifts placed under the tree, plus any money donations handed to staff, will be given to the Salvation Army who will distribute them to the Port families registered for assistance.
"We help people throughout the entire year, but at Christmas time there are always more families in need," Salvation Army envoy Howard Koutnik said.
"Any gift to help those families would be appreciated."
The appeal is one of the largest in Australia and this year it is hoped 500,000 gifts will be donated nationwide.
Last year, 2300 gifts were donated at Salamander Bay.
Jodie Smith, who organised this year's Salamander Bay Wishing Tree Appeal, encouraged residents to donate something to the tree.
"A little gift goes a long way for someone who doesn't have much," she said.
Ms Smith said gifts did not have to be bought from Kmart.
Any gifts suitable for infants through to seniors, including teens and adults of both sexes, were appreciated no matter where they came from.
The appeal will run up to Christmas Eve.
Salamander Bay Kmart is open seven days and will be open extra hours throughout the Christmas period.
