The one-year-old male kelpie was found wandering along Seaham Road at Clarence Town and taken to Port Stephens Animal Refuge.
Mary Hickie, from the refuge, said the black and tan dog was nice but a "typical puppy".
"He needs a bit of training," she said. "But he's not stupid, he will learn."
Ms Hickie said the dog, which has no name, is lovely, not aggressive and would be suitable for any type of home.
"He's a lovable pup and very attractive looking," she said.
The dog will cost $285 to adopt from the Williamtown refuge, which includes vaccinations, desexing, microchipping and a lifetime registration. For more information phone Ms Hickie on 4965 0100.
