The rally was organised by the Port Stephens Social Justice Group, a politically non-aligned, non-denominational group of residents.
The group supports human rights and social justice in a range of areas.
The demonstration at the Victoria Parade bridge brought together the diversity of skills among group members.
Support also came from some businesses and a number of Port Stephens community groups.
Some concerned passers-by joined the rally.
Encouragement was demonstrated by smiles and waves from pedestrians, motorists honking their horns in support, and people asking for copies of the social justice group's asylum seeker facts brochure.
"It was gratifying to see these compassionate people in the Port Stephens community adding their support," the group's founder, Reverend Peter Botha, said.
The Port Stephens Social Justice Group meets at 7pm on the fourth Monday of each month at the Salamander Bay Uniting Church. See portstephenssocial justicegroup.com.
