Throughout October and November, the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Prostate Cancer Support Group has led an awareness and fund-raising campaign called PSA.
The campaign was run in conjunction with Movember, the month men are encouraged to grow a moustache to raise money and awareness about men’s health, and will come to an end with a family-friendly gala day on November 30.
A car boot sale will start at 10am in Providence Bay Park, near Hawks Nest surf club, and will include carnival rides and face painting.
A Movember party will be held from 2pm at Benchmark on Booner where sporting memorabilia, Christmas dolls, petrol vouchers plus photo prints will be raffled and auctioned off to raise money.
‘‘Many of us have grown mo’s,’’ the support group’s Howard Grant said.
‘‘We’re looking pretty awful.
‘‘We hope people will come along and sponsor us to shave our mo’s off.’’
Ice cream and prawn eating competitions will be held and the mo judged to be the best in Benchmark on Booner would win a prize.
Mr Grant said it was hoped the gala day and Movember party would motivate both men and women into action about checking for prostate cancer.
Money raised will go to a Hunter-based prostate cancer research.
