PORT Stephens students can get a $2000 boost towards their tertiary studies from the mayoral scholarships fund.

Applications are now sought with eight scholarships up for grabs thanks to Port Stephens Council and partnering businesses.
In addition, scholarship recipients will get a one-year membership to the YMCA in Port Stephens.
"Success isn't cheap. I would encourage anyone heading off to their first year of university, TAFE or other recognised tertiary institution in 2015 to apply," mayor Bruce MacKenzie said.
To be eligible for the program, applicants must live in the Port Stephens Local Government Area and undertake tertiary education or training.

All applications must include the submission of HSC results and two character references along with the completed form. Last year Lauren Smith from Medowie was awarded a mayoral scholarship.
She is studying midwifery at the University of Newcastle and the money has definitely come in handy.
"It makes things a lot easier; you don't have to work so much," she said.
The 19-year-old spent her money on textbooks and expenses while reducing her part-time working hours so she would have more time to study and complete placement subjects.
"The application was easy to fill out," she said.
