Roger Price, president of the Nelson Bay Marlins AFL Club, along with club member Sue Rymer said the interest in forming a senior women's team was first mooted a couple of years ago.
"The Marlins have always had junior girls playing with the boys but they would disappear when they got to senior age," Price said.
"Some would move to another area, others would change codes and some would give the game away altogether.
"I know of one Nelson Bay girl who is a member of the all-Australian team and currently has to go to Sydney and Melbourne to play.
"So we decided it was time to get these women back together and form a Nelson Bay team."
Price said four clubs have already nominated for the 2015 Black Diamond senior women's competition and he hoped the Bay would make five.
"We have also received some interest from a number of women on the RAAF Base at Williamtown," Price said.
Rymer said a women's team in the bay was long overdue.
"AFL is a great sport for females. It is relatively easy to learn, not aggressive and great for fitness - also relatively inexpensive," she said.
