National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Great Lakes area manager Steve Smith said the camping spots had been closed since a storm  on November 23 caused a number of lightning-strike fires.

The Tamboi walking track, which includes the Brambles Green trail, was still closed due to significant fire damage to a boardwalk.

Mr Smith said a multi-agency response plus hazard-reduction burns earlier in 2014  ensured the November 23 fires were contained  quickly.

Twelve NPWS and eight Rural Fire Service (RFS) fire units supported by three boat crews, two helicopters and  a fixed-wing water bomber were called to help contain the fire.

Adjoining private property landholders, NSW Water Police, Roads and Maritime Services and Port Stephens Marine Rescue also helped with fire-fighting along the Myall River.

Mr Smith said that despite recent rain, conditions in the park were still dry.

“We’d like to remind visitors how important it is to observe fire bans in national parks,” he said, adding that it was important for visitors to stay out of burnt bushland areas.

“Trees inside the burnt areas may have been damaged by fire and branches or trees could fall down and cause injury.

“These areas also need to regenerate and by keeping off the newly burnt ground it will protect and enable new growth to form.’’
