The couple's son, Wayne, said it was a wonderful occasion, befitting of a diamond anniversary.
Letters of congratulations had come from the Queen, Governor-General, NSW Governor, the Prime Minister, NSW Premier, Members of Parliament and the council.
Beautiful flowers were presented to the Carters from family and friends.
"Mum and Dad are an inspiration to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren," Wayne said.
"We are so happy for them, and so proud of these lovely people, our parents."
