The money was part of a Port Stephens Council mayoral academic scholarships program recently presented to seven students in their first year of tertiary study.
When not on the job with his dad Steve, a qualified builder, 16-year-old Jarrod is studying carpentry at Hunter TAFE college in Metford. He also works part-time at KFC.
"The $2000 will help with textbooks, tools and transport," the former Tomaree High School student said.
Representatives from sponsors the Wests Group, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Macka's Sand and Soil Supplies, Newcastle Airport, Salamander Bay Recycling, Hunter Land, Weathertex and the YMCA Port Stephens joined mayor Bruce MacKenzie in presenting the recipients with $2000 each.
The other recipients were all University of Newcastle students:
Sarah Gratton - medical science
Jessica Holmes - physiotherapy
Jackson Rampart - commerce
Courtney White - communication/law
Joseph Verschelden - law/commerce
Andrew Rudge - civil engineering.
