It was there that the Club Marine Trailer Boat Fishing Tournament was born.
In the years since, the fishing tournament has grown to be one of the most popular family fishing tournaments in Australia while staying true to its original ideal of making anglers of all ages and skill levels welcome.
The rules are simple to understand however, it is a hard tournament to win.
The senior and junior anglers who take home the champion mantles each year are truly "gun" fishermen who had worked very hard to be on the podium for a number of species.
These days, competitors could expect to join around 1000 others in the tournament and 450 boats to compete for more than $80,000 in species and lucky draw prizes.
The Club Marine Trailer Boat Fishing Tournament will be held in Nelson Bay between Friday, March 27 and Sunday, March 29.
Online registrations to the tournament have now closed. However, registrations can be made today, Thursday, at the tournament base located at Eastern Groyne along Victoria Parade in Nelson Bay.

As well as the trailer boat tournament, the Twin Rivers Fishing Classic will be held in Raymond Terrace this weekend. For more information on the classic click here.
