TWO Port police officers will swap their blue uniforms for lycra when they tackle a gruelling 300km bicycle ride from Sydney to Canberra from May 1-3.

Senior constables Nick Leach (Nelson Bay Water Police) and Luke Rogers (Raymond Terrace) will be joined by another 110 cyclists in the NSW Police Legacy Remembrance Bike Ride to take place from the Wall of Remembrance in Sydney's Domain to the National Police Wall of Remembrance in Canberra.
Organisers are hoping to raise more than $100,000 for NSW Police Legacy, which provides emotional and financial support to police widows, widowers and dependent children in times of tragedy and need.
"It's a great cause and while I would hope that we would never have to use the money, I am very much aware of the great work provided by Police Legacy," 34-year-old Sen Const Leach said.
"I have been in training for some time now, cycling around the Bay and beyond, preparing myself for the hills and climbs, as well as changing weather conditions."
Sen Const Rogers is backing up for his second ride; in addition to raising funds, he is eager to challenge himself.
"Last year I was more content to stay with the easy riding group and take my time but this year I want to go faster and try and stick with the leading group," the 39-year-old experienced cyclist said.
The riders will leave Sydney early Friday (May 1) morning and are expected to reach Canberra by Monday afternoon after overnight stays in Mittagong and Goulburn.
