Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club's Sophie Cottam, 16, narrowly won the division two off-the-beach competition in the Junior One Sail Series, which was raced on April 15 and 16.
The two-day series drew a multi-fleet lineup of young sailors from Wollongong, Sydney, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Bay.
Cottam beat out fellow clubmates Harry Bailey and Marcus Busch to win division two of the junior series, the same final order in the BIC one design division.
"Sailing with my friends is always fun and Harry and Marcus are really great competition," Cottam said. "But it's very good natured."
On Monday and Tuesday, April 13 and 14, of the regatta, Cottam crewed on the Beneteau 40.7 called JAB with the main Sail Port Stephens fleet.
She said she was "stoked" to hear JAB went on to win the Commodore's Cup series.
Colin Skelton, crew for JAB, a Lake Macquarie yacht, said he knew of Cottam through Yachting Australia.
"It was a nice chance for her to do something different," Skelton said. "She was keen to be involved and we made it happen."
Smooth Cimminals, a Port Stephens yacht skippered by Ray Harley, came in at number 10 in division one of the Performance Cruising and equal 24 in division two of the Commodores Cup Cruising.
The other Port yacht, Watch Me, skippered by Matt Bonser, came in at number five in division one of the Performance Cruising.
