Now the Soldiers Point Road centre, headed by general manager Gerard McClafferty, can add business leader to its long list of achievements.
"In October 2010 we spent $40,000 installing solar panels and, four-and-a-half years on, our investment has turned into a neat little earner," he said.
"We now generate more electricity than we use, so for the duration of the contract [next 18 months] we will be operating on free power."
Mr McClafferty estimates the centre would save about $1500 over the next 18 months.
Salamander Bay Recycling donates on average $30,000 a year to Port community groups while employing 11 fulltime and casual workers and providing on-site programs.
