The Marine Drive station would be open between 10am and 2pm.
Families were encouraged to take part in a range of free activities including demonstrations, station tours and fire safety presentations.
‘‘With winter approaching, [the] open day is a timely opportunity to talk to the experts about home fire safety,’’ Tea Gardens FRNSW captain Jim Wisemantel said.
‘‘Winter is the worst time of the year for home fires, with 60per cent of all house fires occurring in the cooler months of May to September.’’
Children who attended the open day could see fire trucks and firefighting equipment up close, which was always one of the highlights of the event, Mr Wisemantel said.
The station was also planning to cut up a car, demonstrating that it was not just fires firefighters dealt with but rescue emergencies as well.
‘‘[Learn] about simple safety tips you can use to ensure you and your family escape a fire quickly and safely,’’ Mr Wisemantel said.
