Mr Klein, of Corlette, has been described by the many people he has touched as a terrific husband and father, great firefighter, hard working mentor, teacher, team player and an all-round good bloke.
He was a Rural Fire Service firefighter for 22 years and captain of Soldiers Point RFS for the past 10 years.
"Neville was a tremendous captain and someone who was proud of being behind the push to establish a marine firefighting capability for Port Stephens," fellow firefighter Dave Brown said. "As a volunteer he set a wonderful, thoroughly professional example and culture for the brigade."
A 4th dan black belt, Mr Klein was a four-times Australian karate champion, an enthusiastic snow skier and a dedicated touch football player and referee for the Nelson Bay association.
Mr Klein, who died from an aggressive tumour, was also an advocate for men's health issues including regular prostate cancer checks.
He is survived by his wife Pauline, children Nathan, 36, Joanna, 33 and Sigrid, 29, and four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday at Salamander Uniting Church.
