Port councillors, at their last meeting, approved the next stage of the Ferodale Sports Complex, encompassing Medowie Sports and Community Club.
The design is expected to transform Ferodale Oval into a hub for all Medowie sporting and community groups, including the RSL sub-branch.
"A brilliant step forward after many years of bloody hard work ... finally we can say there are clear signs of a light at the end of the long tunnel," Central Ward councillor and longtime club support Cr Chris Doohan said.
Club president Rod Kerr said that the new complex would provide not just sporting but community buildings as well as more car parking.
"I recall when I first moved to Medowie in 1984 [the late] Ken Muir and [former mayor] Cr Craig Baumann - along with many other like-minded community people - talked of creating a sports and community club in Medowie," Mr Kerr said.
"Since then there have been several attempts to turn those plans into reality ... the council's decision means we can now progress the plans."
Mr Kerr said there was an overwhelming need for larger meeting rooms, a home for the Medowie RSL sub-branch, community space for groups such as the bridge club and cancer support group, a new kitchen, sporting structures and bowling green.
"Our intention is to provide a facility available for use by all to encourage cohesion and interaction of all ages in the community," he said.
"The club also has the potential to be used as an evacuation and disaster recovery centre during emergencies and a designated bushfire safe area."
Medowie RSL president Ian Harding said that the new meeting rooms would be a welcome addition for the sub-branch members.
"We are hopeful it will become our new headquarters," he said.
