Organisers of the fourth annual human whale event, at which people formed the outline of a giant whale, said a record 1000 people turned out to Shoal Bay Beach.
"This is the most we've had in the four years of holding it," one of the organisers, Frank Future, said.
"It was excellent and the weather couldn't have been better."
Mr Future, a co-owner of Imagine Cruises, said to make the moment even more special, as the helicopter flew over the beach to take pictures of the human whale a pod of dolphins swam past.
People who took part in the event this year, about 200 more than in 2014, were asked to register.
Organisers said they hoped to have this year's human whale recognised as a world record.
Mr Future said holding the event in the holiday period this year meant more families took part.
Responding to feedback, Mr Future said organisers would look to hold next year's human whale in the holidays but at a weekend to cater for people who work during the week.
The human whale was the final event in the maiden Naturefest festival.
The penultimate event, on June 28, was the annual dolphin census.
About 50 people registered to help count the Port's dolphin population.
The tally on Monday was 57.
