Proffessor Howard Dick, an economist who has written extensively on governance, will be keynote speaker at an EcoNetwork Community Forum on Sunday, July 26, from 2pm at the Tomaree Community Centre.
The forum's theme is 'What we can do to protect public parklands, wildlife habitat, village and town amenity'.
Prof Dick believes that "good government begins with us; empowering local communities".
His current research and most recent publications are in governance (corruption and international business), cities and globalisation.
EcoNetwork co-ordinator Darrell Dawson said all were welcome to hear how community group leaders can get involved defending neighbourhoods threatened by intrusive developments.
These groups, he said, include the Boomerang Park Action Group, which is opposing the council's plans to rezone a large portion of Boomerang Park for development; South Tomaree Community Association, opposing an impending Fishermans Bay subdivision; the No Sandmining in Bob's Farm and the Williamtown & Surrounds Residents Action Group, both opposing major new sand quarries.
Also speaking on the day are Gerard McClafferty, manager of Salamander Recycling, who will discuss the benefits from a solar power system, and Nigel Waters who will deliver an update on the Tree Preservation Order.
