Alexis Bridge, a youth support mentor with the Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation, is seeking sponsorship to get a team of children from Port Stephens and surrounds to the annual knockout, which will be held in Dubbo across the October long weekend.

The mixed gender Wahroonga team would be separate from the Worimi Dolphins who were only taking a men's team to the knockout this year due to a lack of sponsorship.

An under-17 team, the Worimi Warriors, formed by elder Richard Farley, would also go to Dubbo, but not under the Worimi Dolphins Rugby League Football Club banner.

In her role as a youth support mentor, Ms Bridge works with indigenous children.

"I go into the local schools and teach the indigenous students about their culture as well as work with the disengaged students so that we can keep them in school to get the education they need for their future," she said.

"As an incentive program for good behaviour and attendance we are going to take an under 12s side to the knockout."

Ms Bridge said this gave Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were unable to play weekend rugby league a chance to experience the game.

The costs to get the team to Dubbo had already surpassed $1800, and the money put forward already has been provided by Ms Bridge, who is a volunteer with the Raymond Terrace-based aboriginal corporation, which was why she was asking for help.
