"Accidents can happen anywhere and you never know who can be called on to perform first aid, or at least instruct an untrained adult ... it could save someone's life," Mr Cooper said.
With that in mind, Mr Cooper has elected to take his training course to the Port's primary schools as a free community service.
"Lessons go for 90 minutes and my aim is to expose every year 6 student in Port Stephens to basic first aid, highlighting emergency response," he said.
"A trail run was conducted at Anna Bay Public School and proved very popular among the students.
"I would not expect an 11 or 12 year old to perform CPR but it's quite possible they could be in a situation where an adult has suffered a heart attack and there's no-one else around with first aid training. They could act as instructor."
Mr Cooper said students would also be instructed in bites and stings, bandaging and slings. He said he hoped to take the free service to all Port primary schools.
