To allow for the construction work, Port Stephens Council will close the arena in Neil Carroll Reserve from Monday for about three weeks.
The proposed upgrade had received the thumbs up from regular user Mitchell Avery, a 13-year-old from Corlette, and his mates.
"I heard about the improvements on Facebook and think it's great. I use the park nearly every day in the school holidays and can't wait for the new one," he said.
The council-funded project will expand the existing skate park resulting in a state-of-the-art facility, east ward councillor John Morello said.
"The work will be carried out by D-Brand Skate Parks, and the funding has been assisted with a kind donation from The Rock Church for $8800," Cr Morello said.
"The result is expected to be a great addition to Nelson Bay's recreation facilities and a destination for young people to enjoy the beautiful outdoors."
The council's community and recreation co-ordinator Brendan Callander said the skate park would be closed for three weeks, weather permitting, for safety reasons.
"The council is planning a small event to officially reopen the facility in early November."
