Hornets Regional Touch will once again host the Peter Wilson memorial junior championships at Tomaree Sporting Complex.
More than 1500 junior touch players from Taree, Forster, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Muswellbrook, Port Stephens and many more places, plus supporters and officials, are set to attend the two-day tournament.
Kim Miller, regional director for the Hornets, said there were 112 teams, from under 10s to 18s, entered into the tournament this year.
“The Peter Wilson Memorial Championship is a forerunner to the junior state cup, which is held in Port Macquarie,” Mr Miller said.
“That is the biggest tournament in the southern hemisphere that attracts 360 teams.
“The [Nelson Bay] championship is a chance for our [Hornets] teams to get up to speed and play at that [Port Macquarie] competition.”
Mr Miller said the Peter Wilson Memorial Championship had been hosted by the Hornets, the regional body of touch football for the Hunter and Western areas of NSW, in Nelson Bay for the past seven years.
He said Nelson Bay was an ideal location to hold the tournament due to “the beaches, the accommodation and the fields”.
“The fields are built on sand,” Mr Miller said.
“A couple of times we’ve had wet weather, and the grounds have held up very well because they are built on sand.”
Games will kick off about 8am on Saturday, February 6, and will wind down about 6pm.
The action will kick off on Sunday, February 7, about 8 and finish about 4pm.
