Carney brings a wealth of experience to the club with more than 100 first grade games for the Cronulla Sharks, Illawarra Steel and then the Newcastle Knights during the 1980s. He also was part of the tour to Papua New Guinea with the Australian Rugby League president's team in 1985.
The committee for the Bomboras for the upcoming season has been decided, with Richard Pese as president, Murray Waugh as vice-president, Lucy Mae Sandin and Luke Carroll sharing the role of secretary, and Diane Smyth as treasurer.
Training starts at Fingal Oval on Tuesday, February 16 at 6pm.
The 2016 Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League season kicks off in April.
Pre-season match for the Gropers
NELSON Bay Rugby Union Club has lined up several important pre-season games with the Gropers attending the North Lakes Sevens tournament on the Central Coast this Saturday.
The club will take 30 players to Port Macquarie on Saturday, February 27 for a pre-season trial against the Hastings Valley Vikings.
The club will also host a trial game at Bill Strong Oval in the next few weeks.
The recruitment drive is producing results with several quality signings to be announced soon.
Sharks in league competition
THE Port Stephens Sharks Rugby League Club will play in the Newcastle Hunter Rugby League competition this season and with the support of Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League Club.
They will make their home base at the Salamander junior sports complex.
Training will start on Tuesday, February 16 at 6pm.
Two-try hero from the Northern Blues 2005 grand final win, JT Hill, will be the club's captain and coach for this season.
